Volturino: an area with deep roots

DAUNIAN MOUNTAINS

The beauty of an unspoilt land

There is a place in Puglia where untamed nature meets the narrow streets of villages perched on hillsides, precious treasure chests that contain centuries of history, art and traditions.

These are the Daunian Mountains, one of the most evocative, characteristic corners of the Puglia hinterland. A welcoming land, historically accustomed to seeing the transit of different peoples and cultures, to the paths of pilgrims and the passage of shepherds.

A place with an amazing richness of landscapes and colours. In spring it will welcome you with the green of its wheat fields and woods, the yellow of its broom and the red of its poppies.

In summer it will dazzle you with the gold of ripe wheat and the yellow of sunflowers, in autumn it will envelop you with the scent of must from the wine cellars and, in winter, it will offer you the magic of snowy landscapes.

These are the Daunian Mountains: an incredible collage of emotions and sensations just waiting to be discovered.

VOLTURINO

Where the wind caresses the hills

The Planisium Estate is in Volturino, a delightful mountain village on the border between Campania, Molise and Puglia. The name of the village comes from Volturnus, the name given by the ancient Romans to the strong, hot wind typical of this area. It was one of five hamlets created on the ridge of the Daunian Mountains to protect the town of Montecorvino, which has since disappeared, against invaders from Samnium and Abruzzo. Of the other four, only their names have survived, now used for the districts or contrade in Volturino: Monte Sambuco, La Umara, Santa Lucia, and Tortorano.

Today, it is a charming medieval village that holds pleasant surprises in store for those who walk through its little narrow characteristic streets: the rue, the stepped alleys in a herringbone pattern that shelters from the wind that often blows over Volturino; and the sporti, passageways between ancient buildings built for defence purposes in case of attack.

When the sky is clear and the air is crisp, Volturino offers spectacular views of the Tavoliere, the Gargano mountains and the Tremiti Islands.

VOLTURINO TRADITIONS

The roots of an ancient spirit

Feast of Madonna della Serritella

The first Sunday in May is the Feast of the Madonna della Serritella, the patron saint of Volturino since 1774. It was the Knights Templar who introduced the cult of the Virgin at the beginning of the twelfth century. Today, the celebrations in her honour include a wonderful parade of allegorical floats from the Rural Chapel of Serritella into town.

The floats have replaced “la cavallereccia”, a parade of horses decked out with ribbons of various colours, and “la Cavalcata degli Angioli”, a procession of mares with their foals, cows, mules and oxen, carrying children dressed as angels and saints on their backs.

Festival of 8 and 9 September

During the Festa della Madonna della Serritella, her statue is paraded through the village streets. Celebrations include a fair and musical events.
